At the beginning of this year, I started having some lower back trouble. After some X-rays and an MRI, ends up I have a “bulging disc“. I’ve been to some physical therapy which has helped out, but hours of sitting in front of a computer has finally caught up with me. Stretching works, so I now stretch every morning.
That all being said, I was in the market for a new desk chair, since the ones at work were less than ideal. Of course, you see a lot of nice chairs out there, but the good ones cost upwards of $800-$1000!!! I found I liked the Aeron by Herman Miller and the Steelcase Leap chair. (tried them both at Sam Flax) There was a company selling used Leap chairs for $450, which is about 1/2 price, but still costly. Then I just found a guy who is selling off some old inventory of Aeron’s at about $300. The price tag new on these is $975, so it is like 1/3 the price!
You may be saying, “$300 for a chair!!! Crazy!!!”…but seeing as how I spend the majority of my life in a chair (sad…) its a small price to pay IMHO.
Anyway, that all being said, this is the chair I bought, and all I can say is SWEEETTTTT!!!!

Dear Mr Lawson:
I happen to read your interesting story about your search for quality ergonomic seating. I am glad that you came to Sam Flax because as you now know we are one of the very few retailers that actually have all of the best quality American made chairs on our selling floor and in stock.
The reason I am writing you now is to make sure that the people reading your story and you understand what the $300 purchase did not buy you. The Aeron chair has a 12 year all parts and labor warranty. That warranty is worth an awful lot of money as you can imagine over 12 years ( a seat alone will cost $275 without a warranty) Now the warranty is only good for the original buyer so once it’s sold the warranty is voided. Herman Miller also tags each chair with a FO# and date which are like a vin number for a car. This helps when chairs are presented for repair to get an approval to do the warranty work free. Now the best part of this warranty is that the chairs needing repair are picked up repaired and returned at no cost, directly to your home or office.
One final but interesting fact. You can go online and find lots of Herman Miller authorized dealers. What is never mentioned is that when you receive this chair it is not assembled ? We at Sam Flax only sell assembled chairs and only found out about this because we often get customers come into our store with parts that they received and do not know how to do the easy (?) assembly.
Good luck with your Aeron, I hope it lasts forever..
Sincerely,
Jack F
Good Points, thanks! Used is not for everyone…!
The chair I got has the old arm adjustment, and it slips if not tightened harshly. I read online how to fix it, so not a big deal, but I would stress seeing/testing the chair before buying. There were 2 others there, where the back locking mechanisms were not up to par!
