A lot in a little

If you read Matthew 2:9-12, it really blows by some amazing stuff, which considering the length of the Bible, makes you realize the awesome stuff that is in there, for its size.

1) First you have the wisemen following a moving heavenly object to where it finally comes to rest at a place such that they know exactly where to find the child. If you read Luke and the other gospels, you realize at this point he is not a newborn, but still a baby. It is an amazing picture in your mind to picture this, and more amazing to see it depicted as it says. Most amazing is that it really happened!

2) Now you have highly respected wisemen coming into your house, ‘overjoyed’ when they see your baby, and hitting the floor to worship him! I dont know about anyone else, but I would have had out the Louisville Slugger and been chasing these guys out and down the street! Weird stuff, but obviously, all part of God’s plan and the folks knew it.

3) Then…it’s like the Publishers Clearinghouse Sweepstakes at the Joseph residence! They pull out gold, perfume, incense…all real expensive stuff! All signifying something different about Jesus and who he is (see this clip I found online which explains it well):

Gold, which was the usual offering presented to a king by his subjects, represents his office as king (obviously). Frankincense, which was used in worship at the temple, represents both his divine nature and office as most high priest. Myrrh, which is one of the ingredients in the holy anointing oil described in Exodus chapter 30 used to consecrate the things in the temple used to minister unto God, and was also used to anoint the dead, represents his role as the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of man.

4) Then there was the warning in the dream to not go back to the King who TOLD them to do so. This must not have been any whimsical dream that one of ’em had, but a real clear dream that they all had conferred, and decided upon. They were risking their lives at this point disobeying, if I know anything about Kings…

So in a short few verses there are some really cool things! Take your time when reading the Bible and think about each verse! There is a reason its in there, and maybe the reason is that God has a specific message for you.

Fun with your kids

Have you ever tried to think of a hobby or past-time that you could do with your kids that would be fun? I was thinking about this about 2-3 years ago, and was trying to think of something that I have always wanted to try or do, since I was a kid.

What I did was get a nice telescope (a decent one goes for about $250+) and started looking at the night sky. It’s hard to get my kids out in the cold, and I only have time to do it every so often, due to viewing conditions or other things goin on. When I do though, it is really cool! Also, when I showed Saturn to my kids, and they could see the rings of the planet, for about the next year, my daughter every morning would point to stars and ask, “Dada, is that a planet?!!” It’s neat to be able to do something like this with my kids, and I enjoy it as well.

There a lot of things you can do, and any time spent with your kids is going to be a good time!

If you are interested in Astronomy. check out Astromart, which has some forums for beginners and also has classifieds where people sell stuff. There is a link to it here on my page. A good retail place is Orion, and is where I bought my 1st telescope.

Clear Skies!

Guild Wars Anyone?

The only computer game I play anymore is Guild Wars. Actually it is the only game I play at all, really, though I occasionally play an old X-Box or PS1 game. It is fun, I am in a Christian Guild (though have not done much with that) and play when I have some free time. I would recommend it. It is an online game, so you have to be careful for kids, of course.

The graphics are real cool, and it is Dungeons/Dragons type of game. You can play alone or with friends. If alone, you can add computer players to your party.

All in all, its pretty darn cool to see people running around from other countries and locations. Take a look at Guild Wars dot com, and see what you think. It is about the only good one out there that is not subscription based, which means you buy once, and then play all you want! That is COOL!

Free Money!

This week at Woodstock First Baptist, Johnny Hunt mentioned a good representation (I thought) of what the offer of God’s grace and salvation can be likened to. I have always tried to think of one, since I had talked with a friend during college about it, and he said that he had a hard time accepting a loving God who would let a relative of his go to hell, cause that relative was a “good” person.

Basically, the offer of God’s grace and the gift of salvation is like a signed check that God has given each and every one of us. It is up to us if we want to accept His gift, and escape the “poverty” of our sin. There is nothing more to it than that. We just realize that we are sinners, need God, and “cash the check” (ask for forgiveness & salvation) God is not “sending” us to Hell, in fact, it is the last thing he wants for us. He wants us to accept his “Check” so much that he sacrificed his Son for us!

It is too often, we think we can get out of the “poverty” of our sin on our own. We work our whole life with this “check” in our pocket, and try to do it on our own. We need to realize that we will die poor, and never live the abundant life we could.

Also, once we “cash the check”, it almost like we then have a “line of credit”. Even Christians will still try to work on their own, and refuse to use the Holy Spirit to lead their lives. They will still go to Heaven, but their life will not be a fulfilled as it could be.

Don’t leave the check in your pocket. …and dont be afraid that once you cash it, you will owe it back. It ain’t a loan, its a gift. No-one can take it away, and no strings are attached. Once you get the gift of salvation, your life will change, and you may want to do more for God, but the Lord works in all our hearts in different ways.

Don’t leave the check in your pocket! (click the “Got Jesus?” link on the right for more info)

Jealousy…and Herod

In Matthew 2 is the story of the wise men. The first verses point out their trip to see Herod to find out where the Christ is. (BTW, a real cool version of this story is in the first chapters of Ben-Hur)

you can see Herod on the seat of his chair, “Say what? The King of who? umm…oh yeah, let me look into that for you. I need to worship him as well.” This is a guy who has a large ego, and a real tight grip on his Throne. He is jealousy of anyone who may jeopardize that.

It makes me think of me, being too comfortable of where I am at, or when someone is excelling in something that I am good at as well. All of the sudden, the competition spirit comes out to show them I am better. Competition is good, but for the sake of keeping hold of a title cause you “need” that to feel good…thats bad.

The right thing to do is to be happy with/for that person for their accomplishments! WOW! That was easy to say! Tough to do…definitely need the Holy Spirits help with that! (…after a while, you realize, what good thing do we NOT need the Holy Spirits help for?)

Isn’t it interesting…

I am making a new 2008 effort to take some time each morning before I dive into work to read the Bible a little (via Bible Gateway, btw…) and think about it to make some comments. Generally, prior to this, I have always had some time when I get in real early to work to either dive right into work, or talk a little with my freinds.

Since I’ve started this, its funny how many other things I’ve suddenly had an interest in. All of my hobbies have all came back to mind with a force, and I can think of 150 things I would rather be doing than reading the Bible and thinking about it.

Coincidence? I don’t think so… So if this happens to you, just remember what ol’ Jack Burton always says at a time like that!

…I mean stick to your guns, pray that the Holy Spirit will support your efforts, and give you strength and focus to do what is right.

(Jack Burton…he kills me…!)

Jesus, the Prophecies fulfilled…

Verse 22 of Matt 1 mentions a reference to Isaiah. It started me thinking about how I have always heard that Jesus fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament about a Messiah for the Jews. Off to Google to find this, and much more describing each one in detail, so as you read down through them you realize that this is not just some air-filled statement, but has merits for proof in the Bible:

“There have been described in the Old Testament 300 prophecies of the first coming of the Messiah and 500 of the second coming, all of then made hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus and fulfilled to the letter in Jesus Christ, the Messiah.

George Heron, a French mathematician, calculated that the odds of one man fulfilling only 40 of those prophecies are 1 in 10 to the power of 157. That is a 1 followed by 157 zeros. Compare it to this; your odds on winning the state lottery are 14 followed by 6 zeros.

Another mathematician, Dr. Peter S. Ruckman, claims the odds of being fulfilled only 60 of them by the only person who claimed to be the Son of God, and who died on a “tree” on Calvary, and who rose the 3rd day are astronomical!… not just one in one trillion, but one out of ten to the 895th power. That is a one over a one followed by 895 zeros.”

Those are some odds! Of course, if it all was God’s plan to start, then it was really not by chance or odds at all….was it 😉

Joseph’s Faith

Moving ahead in Matthew, the first thing after the chronology is about Jesus’ birth.

It always amazes me that its been about 400 years since any prophet or direct revelations from God. Then all of the sudden, Joseph’s wife, who was engaged (or something more serious, as they did not seem yet to be married, but he may need a divorce) became pregnant. Can you see the discussion between them?

Mary – “Joseph, I’m pregnant, but I have not been with a man, it is from God. An Angel appeared to me and told me so! I swear!”

Joseph – “Uhhh…yeah, sure!? Gotta go!”

Definitely a hard pill to swallow, but he is a righteous man, as the Bible states, and is going to do a really nice thing by keeping it quiet, and just separating. It is curious that God waits to let Joseph decide what to do, prior to sending an Angel to him. The Angel could’ve come to him earlier and let him know, or both of them when having dinner one night. God used this tough time in Joseph’s life to test him, and Joseph did not disappoint! In fact, this allows us to see what a righteous guy he was, since not a lot is said about him after.

I hope I can pass the tests when they come my way. I know I have disappointed God many times, but I think I have done the right thing many times as well!

Here’s to doing right, by God!

Matt’s Arcade Machine Experience!

After finding MAME while looking for old Arcade Machines to purchase or refurbish, I was hooked once I tested it on my home computer…MAME completely simulates all of the old arcade machines I loved to play when I was a kid. Growing up on the Jersey Shore, I used to hang out at Pt. Pleasant and Seaside Heights boardwalks. Just let me say that many hours and quarters were lost improving my skills and competing on those games. Also, to add to my habit, I would work at my folks store, which was connected to Doug’s Arcade. Every lunch was spent in there with 2 chili-dogs, fries, coke and Donkey Kong (or some other game, wonder why I have high cholesterol?)

Back to the point…MAME allowed me to enjoy all those games that you can’t find anymore, for free! Also, since most of them are relatively tame, it will be a great thing to share with my 2 kids, as they grow up! (…of course my wife will play a game or two to amuse me, if I beg)

Enough about that, I will give you the rundown of how I built the machine you see below. Hopefully, you will take the plunge and make a machine of your own. I am just a hacker, and if I can do it…let’s just say that it should make you pretty confident.

On to the research…
